Northcot Bricks are manufactured to F2 rating for Frost Resistance as described in BS EN 771-1: 2003 "Specification for Clay masonry units". The specification is for masonry (walling) products which are to be used in brickwork designed and built in accordance with recommendations in BS PD 6697: 2010 "Recommendations for the design of masonry structures to BS EN 1996-1-1 and BS EN 1996-2" [*See NOTE]
F2 rated bricks are suitable for use in freestanding and retaining walls. For such structures particular attention is drawn to the recommendations in BS PD 6697 for the provision of copings and a sheet DPC, with sealed joints, sandwiched in the mortar joint below copings or cappings constructed with jointed units; also to the recommendation that a waterproof membrane or tanking should be applied to the retaining face of a retaining structure and backfill material should be free draining.
F2 rated bricks are considered as suitable for use the below DPC at the base of a wall. Care should be taken to ensure that any paving abutting the base of a wall is laid to drain surface water away from the wall.
An F2 rating does not signify that such a brick is suitable for use as a paver or as an edge trim feature to paving or planting beds.
* NOTE: Formerly it was required that compliance should be with the recommendations in BS 5628-3: 2005 "Code of practice for the use of masonry - Part 3: Materials and components, design and workmanship". However, in November 2010, BS PD 6697 was published and all parts of BS 5628 were withdrawn and superseded by BS EN 1996 "Eurocode 6. Design of masonry structures".
Customers familiar with the recommendations in BS 5628-3 will see that they have been substantially reiterated in BS PD 6697.
